Positive feedback in the EIA process

Watrec Ltd acted as a consultant in Honkajoki Ltd's rendering plant expansion and development project’s environmental impact assessment (EIA). Southwest Finland Regional Environment Centre acted as the contact authority on the EIA process. It its statement the Environment Centre praised the EIA report as sufficient and comprehensive. According to the Environment Centre the EIA report is a good data package on the rendering plant operations, and particularly on the odors and wastewater treatment processes.

In the EIA process were studied the following environmental impacts of the project alternatives: The project's environmental impact analysis took into consideration the current situation as required by law as an alternative 0 (VE0), which has a capacity of 85 000 tonnes, and execution of the project in three different treatment options, based on about 235 000 tonnes annual capacity of existing lines and restructuring: alternative VE1 new thermal production lines, alternative VE1/1 biogas plant and alternative VE1/2 composting plant and alternative VE 1/3 with 174 000 tonnes a year capacity, where some of the material is submitted to the outside plant. Expansion project was found to have several positive effects.
